overstockArt.com Announces Top Ten Art of the Year 2020

Wichita, Kansas – December 23rd, 2020 – As 2020 draws to a close, overstockArt.com is announcing the Top Ten Artworks of the Year 2020. Of the more than 10,000 hand-painted reproductions available on the oil painting reproduction giant’s website, these have been the most popular in the most challenging year of this generation’s lifetime.

The Top Ten List includes modern artists alongside some of the most iconic and recognized artists from the Renaissance, Impressionists, Post-Impressionist and Art Nouveau periods and movements.

Renoir, an instrumental figure in the Impressionist movement, tops the list with Discarded Roses, a serene still-life. Famously quoted as saying “art should be pleasant, cheerful and pretty…there are too many unpleasant things in life as it is”, Renoir’s uplifting approach is evident in the rich celebration of beauty that is Discarded Roses. It’s been more than 100 years since the painting was completed, and its beauty is just as relevant today as it was then.

Austrian artist, Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) appears twice in the list with two paintings from his ‘Golden Phase’ which was named for his liberal use of shimmering gold leaf: Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer and The Kiss (1908). Klimt was known on the art scene for his adventurous avant-garde style, interpretation of the human condition and capturing emotion, all of which resonate with the ups and downs people all over the world have experienced throughout 2020.

The most modern paintings on the list, Moon by Polish artist, Justyna Kopania and Nighthawks by American artist, Edward Hopper capture calm evening scenes, one set in a deserted diner, the other an almost surreal rendering of the moon rising over a lake, demonstrating a reduction of socializing, and a strengthened connection with nature.

Nature is a recurring theme in the Top 10 Artworks of the Year 2020 List. The pops of color from Monet’s Pathway in Garden at Giverny, Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Rembrandt’s The Storm on the Sea of Galilee bring into focus the majesty and beauty of nature – at times calm, at times stormy.

Top 10 Artworks of the Year 2020:

1.  Renoir – Discarded Roses  (1910)
2.  Rembrandt – The Storm on the Sea of Galilee (1633)
3.  Van Gogh – Starry Night (1889)
4.  Justyna Kopania – Moon (2007)
5.  Da Vinci – The Last Supper (1498)

8.  Gustav Klimt – Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer  (1907)

VP of eCommerce for overstockArt, Amitai Sasson, said “The famous saying, ‘art reflects life, and life reflects art’ truly sums up 2020.”

“2020 has been challenging in ways we didn’t think possible, and similar to viewing a striking or beautiful piece of art, everyone’s experience is different. This led to such a diverse selection of oil paintings making up this year’s Top Ten Artworks.”

“The Top Ten list shows art lovers finding comfort in the classics, dating as far back as Da Vinci’s The Last Supper from 1498, while some have sought out beauty in the present such as Justyna Kopania’s Moon. Calm scenes and powerful aspects of nature are a strong theme throughout the selection. This reflects the result of people being forced to slow down during 2020’s lockdowns: a heightened appreciation for the beauty of nature,” Sasson said.

The Top Ten List was compiled using consumer insights from overstockArt.com’s sales data and intent analysis from its millions of site visitors.
